In ancient times, when the 12 animals were being chosen, the Jade Emperor had two criteria. The animal either had to be of some use to humanity, or had to arrive at the heavenly palace on the day of choosing. When the Horse was still in heaven he had a magnificent pair of wings, but he was arrogant and a bully. One day he got angry and kicked a guard and killed him. The Emperor was so furious that he ordered that the Horse’s wings be cut off and that he should be placed under a great mountain. The Horse wanted to make amends, so he dedicated his life to serving humanity by ploughing fields, transporting goods and fighting in battle. The people recommended the Horse be chosen as the 7th of the 12 animals and he was.
