Snake
In ancient times, when the 12 animals were being chosen, the Jade Emperor had two criteria. The animal either had to be of some use to humanity, or had to arrive at the heavenly palace on the day of choosing. At that time the Snake had legs, but he was lazy and relied on the frog, who didn’t have legs, to catch his food. The frog was popular and the snake grew resentful, and began biting and even killing other creatures. He was summoned before the emperor, and as a punishment his legs were taken from him and were given to the frog. Ashamed by his behaviour, the Snake set about redeeming himself by helping the Dragon control the rains and donating his body to medicine after death. The Emperor was so impressed he made the Snake the 6th of the 12 animals.
